    What is KDP Select?

    KDP Select: full explanation

KDP Select is Amazon's optional enrollment program for eBooks published through Kindle Direct Publishing. Enrolling in KDP Select grants access to three benefits: Kindle Unlimited page-read revenue, Kindle Countdown Deals, and Free Book Promotions. The tradeoff is a 90-day exclusivity commitment — while enrolled, you can't sell the digital version of the book anywhere else (no Apple Books, Kobo, Gumroad, your own site, or other retailers).

What you get when you enroll

    • Kindle Unlimited (KU) access: KU subscribers can borrow your book as part of their subscription. You earn a fraction of a cent per page read (typically $0.004–$0.005 as of 2026) from the KDP Select Global Fund.
    • Kindle Countdown Deals (KCD): US and UK-only promotional pricing where you can temporarily lower your book's price while keeping the 70% royalty rate (normally restricted to prices $2.99+).
    • Free Book Promotions: up to 5 days per 90-day enrollment period where your book is free to all Amazon buyers. Useful for launch visibility and series starter promotions.

    The exclusivity tradeoff

KDP Select requires 90-day Amazon exclusivity for the digital edition. You can still sell print versions anywhere (paperback, hardcover on other platforms), and you can still distribute the manuscript as a lead magnet or PDF gated behind email signup — those aren't considered "selling." But listing the same eBook on Apple Books, Kobo, or your own Gumroad store while in Select violates the terms and can result in removal.

    When Select is worth it

KDP Select is almost always the right call for fiction in KU-native genres(romance, cozy mystery, urban fantasy, paranormal romance, thriller). Voracious KU readers dominate those categories, and page-read revenue often exceeds direct sales revenue. For business non-fiction, specialty guides, and books priced $14.99+, going wide (outside Select) usually earns more. The decision typically hinges on who your readers are and where they prefer to buy.

    How enrollment works

Enroll through the KDP Bookshelf when you publish a new title, or enable Select on an existing title via its Rights & Pricing tab. Enrollment auto-renews every 90 days unless you turn it off at least a few days before the period ends. Amazon sends reminder emails before each auto-renewal.

    Examples

    In practice

Three authors making the KDP Select decision differently, all correctly:

    • A cozy mystery author with a 12-book series. Enrolled in Select from book 1. Each new book's launch drives KU page-read revenue that dwarfs her direct sales. Series read-through across 12 books compounds into $8k+/month. Select exclusivity costs her nothing because KU is 80% of her revenue.
    • A business non-fiction author selling a $24 book. Skipped Select — the book is priced above the KU-friendly $2.99–$9.99 range, and his buyers find him via LinkedIn, podcasts, and his newsletter, not Amazon browse. Going wide on Apple Books, Gumroad, and his own site produces more revenue than KU page-reads would have.
    • A debut romance author. Enrolled in Select for the first 90 days to test KU performance. Saw strong read-through and renewed. Plans to go wide in 18 months once the catalog reaches 10+ books and she has a direct reader list.

    Frequently asked questions

How long is the KDP Select enrollment period?+

90 days. Enrollment auto-renews for another 90 days unless you opt out through KDP's Bookshelf > Rights & Pricing at least a few days before the period ends. Amazon sends reminder emails before each renewal.

Can I keep paperback and hardcover sales on other platforms while in KDP Select?+

Yes. KDP Select exclusivity only applies to the digital (eBook) edition. Print books can be sold on any platform including your own site, Barnes & Noble, Books-A-Million, and independent bookstores.

Does giving away my book as a lead magnet violate KDP Select exclusivity?+

No. Using your manuscript as a gated lead magnet, newsletter freebie, or email-list bonus doesn't count as 'selling' on another platform. The exclusivity rule prohibits listing the eBook for sale on another digital retailer, not distributing it freely to your own subscribers.

Do I have to enroll every book I publish in KDP Select?+

No. Enrollment is per-title. You can have some books in Select and others going wide at the same time. Many authors enroll their full series in Select while keeping a single standalone book wide, or vice versa.

What happens if I break KDP Select exclusivity?+

Amazon can remove the book from sale or remove it from the Select program. First violations are usually met with warnings and a request to remove the book from other retailers. Repeated or deliberate violations can affect your publishing account. If you accidentally list on another retailer, contact KDP support immediately to remove it and restore compliance.
